ReCAAP (Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia) has recently reported a total of 95 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships during January to June 2025. This marks a 83% increase in the total number of incidents compared to the same period in 2024, when 52 incidents were reported.

Seafarers are strongly reminded to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring their safety and security while transiting high-risk areas, particularly the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS), which accounted for 84% of all reported incidents. Most incidents involved petty theft, often occurring during night hours (0100–0400 hrs), with perpetrators typically targeting engine spares and unsecured items. Though most crew were not harmed, some incidents did involve crew restraint or minor injuries.
