The regulation of fuel emissions is gathering pace and becoming more stringent. With the first full year of shipping’s inclusion in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) now completed, and the FuelEU Maritime Regulations first year having commenced in January 2025, it is important to consider lessons that have been learned and identify where compliance is proving to be difficult. It is also now becoming clearer what shape the future IMO Global Fuel Standard and pricing mechanism may take, with a potential start date in January 2028. This further layer of regulation will add to the challenges already facing the shipping industry – but will also provide opportunities.
