MARBURG VIRUS EQUATORIAL GUINEA

There have been a number of cases of the Marburg Virus in West Africa and in particular in Equatorial Guinea. Marburg Virus is similar to Ebola and can kill as many as 90% of those infected. Luckily it is very rare, but there are concerns about this West African outbreak. The incubation period is between 3 and 10 days. Peak phasis is 7 to 15 days after appearance of first symptoms. During the last known epidemic (in Congo RDC 1999-2000) the fatality rate reached 70%.
The Equatorial Guinean authorities have thus placed the districts of Nsok-Nsomo and Ebibeyin under enhanced surveillance. Travel to the land border areas with Cameroon (Ebibeyin) and Gabon is strongly discouraged. For vessels calling in the vicinity, crew members should be strongly advised to remain on board, limit contact with shore people, and if they must disembark stay within Port limits and avoid any travel to inland areas.
