TURKEY: NO DISCHARGE OF SCRUBBER SYSTEM WASHING WATER

Published: 23 April 2021

Local correspondents in Turkey have advised that the authorities have recently announced the following:

“Discharge of waste, petrol and petrol derivatives along with bilge water, dirty ballast water, sludge, slop, oil and similar solid and liquid waste, any type of cargo waste originating from ships and any planes which fly over the parts of the seas which are under Turkish sovereignty, is hereby forbidden”.  This prohibition also extends to the discharge of wash water from open loop scrubber systems.  The result is that ships operating with open-loop scrubbers will have to switch to low-sulphur compliant fuels when entering/sailing in Turkish waters. For further details, please find our correspondents’ translation of the regulations regarding scrubber usage in Turkey here.

On the Club’s webpage, you can find our updated “List of jurisdictions restricting or banning Scrubber Wash Water Discharges”.
