CHINA: BAN ON TRANSPORTATION OF TOXIC CHEMICALS

Our China correspondents Oasis P&I, in their Circular No. 2103, provide details of Shanghai MSA’s ban, from 01 Mar 2021, on the transportation of highly toxic chemicals in the Yangtze River basin. The total length of the Yangtze River is about 6300 km and the main commercial waterway is about 2843 km long. The main ports along the Yangtze River include some wharfs of Shanghai Port, Taicang, Changshu, Nantong, Jiangyin, Zhangjiagang, Jingjiang, Taizhou, Yangzhou, Zhenjiang, Nanjing, Ma An Shan, Wuhan, Yibin, etc. There are significant fines for infringement of the regulations and Members planning on shipping any chemicals in the area are advised to check with local agents and correspondents about which chemicals are included in the ‘toxic’ list.
