FISHERY FARMS AROUND THE CHINESE COAST
Published: 26 March 2026
The Club continues to receive notice of claims for damage to aquaculture farms located along the coast of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
Along with the claims for damage to the farm, there is also a risk of damage to the ship’s equipment.
Unfortunately, many farms are not shown on navigational charts, and even positions of known farms are subject to change at short notice.
Our local correspondent Oasis P&I produced a circular (No. 2504) in July 2025, highlighting the locations of known farms at that time. They have further produced a recent update circular (No. 2603) raising awareness of a new fishery farm near the ports of Rizhao and Lanshan that was not yet included in local navigation warnings.
Ships navigating in or near the coast of the PRC are recommended to:
- Request the latest fishery farm information from the local agent in advance, check the updated chart and navigation warnings issued by local authorities, include this information in the passage plan and ECDIS, and maintain enhanced lookout when navigating in these areas.
- Only navigate in the official recommended channels when accessing these ports.
- If possible, avoid entering into or departing from these ports or anchorages during nighttime or periods of poor visibility.
- Maintain a proper lookout at all times during navigation, checking AIS and radar while maintaining visual lookout. (Note that many of the fishery farms do not have AIS or radar reflectors).
