BRAZIL: SEAMAN’S BOOK NO LONGER VALID FOR IMMIGRATION PURPOSES
Published: 28 April 2023
During the COVID-19 period, immigration authorities in Brazil agreed that either a Seaman’s Book (traditionally a record of certificates, days at sea etc.) or a Seafarer’s Identity Document (which can be used for immigration purposes) could be used as a travel document and for the purpose of temporary visa exemption. In normal circumstances, only the Seafarer’s Identity Document could be used for immigration purposes without the need for a visa. The authorities extended this period until 30 April 2023 and there are no signs that this will be extended any further.
Members should be aware that with effect from 1 May 2023, the Seaman’s Book will not be accepted by the immigration authorities and only the Seafarer’s Identity Document can be used. The authorities will impose fines for non-compliance.
As there are many other rules and regulations surrounding immigration in Brazil, Members are advised to check with local correspondents if they have any questions.
