DRUG SMUGGLING IN MEXICO, BRAZIL AND COLOMBIA
Published: 30 March 2023
Mexico: Our correspondent, P&I Services Mexico, has advised that as of February 2023 there has been a sudden increase in narcotics-related incidents in Mexican East Coast Ports. Based on publicly available information, these incidents are affecting bulk and tanker vessels alike. The current modus operandi appears to be insertions in the sea chests, perhaps while the vessels are at anchor.
Brazil: The latest circular on the smuggling of illegal narcotics in Brazilian ports from our correspondent, Brazil P&I, highlights procedures to be followed by shipowners operating in Brazilian waters due to the increase in smuggling of narcotics on board vessels. The guidelines aim to protect the crew, reduce the risk of attempts to smuggle illicit products on board, as well as to meet with local authorities’ requirements to combat international drug trafficking.
Colombia: Our correspondent, A&A Multiprime, has published an updated 2023 report on drug smuggling risks in Colombia. The report includes new recommendations based on the latest trends in drug smuggling and new insights provided by the Colombian Maritime Authority.
