PIRACY: INDIAN OCEAN NO LONGER A HIGH RISK AREA
Published: 1 September 2022
With effect from 1 January 2023, the Indian Ocean High Risk Area (HRA) for piracy will be removed which reflects a significantly improved piracy situation in the region. There have been no reports of piracy attacks off Somalia since 2018, partly due to the counter-piracy initiatives undertaken by many regional and international organisations. However, Members are reminded, before transiting the region, to continue to carry out risk assessments and to follow Best Practice Management 5 (BMP5), full details of which are available on the website.
