NEW DRAFT LEVELS TESTED IN THE AMAZON
Published: 3 February 2022
Correspondents advise that the Brazilian Navy is carrying out navigation tests for a draft of 11.90 meters in the Grande do Curuá Channel, at Barra Norte which is the main navigational entry to the Amazon River. During this testing stage, tankers and vessels, carrying dangerous cargo, will not be allowed to sail with the revised draft, and vessels with a draft of more than 11.50 meters must use the pilotage service. It is expected that, if the trial is successful, the draft will be officially increased. The ports that are expected to benefit from the increase in draft are Manaus, Itacoatiara, Trombetas, Santarém and Santana.
