INDONESIA IMPOSES IMMEDIATE BAN ON COAL EXPORTS

Indonesia has issued a Circular on 31 December 2021, placing an export ban on coal with immediate effect. The Circular halts all exports of coal from all over Indonesia during the month of January 2022. The reason for the export ban is apparently to secure domestic coal supply to the National State Electric Power Company (PLN). The PLN will otherwise have to shut down some of their power plants. The government wants to avoid the economic impact of this. It is hoped that all stakeholders will meet very soon and find a solution but Britannia’s office in Singapore reports that this situation is affecting all ships currently in Indonesia to load coal.
