NIGERIA: INCREASED EFFORTS TO REDUCE PIRACY
Published: 17 June 2021
A new initiative by the Nigerian authorities to try and reduce piracy was launched on 10 June. Known as the Deep Blue Project it is expected to deploy modern security and surveillance equipment to secure Nigerian territorial waters up to the Gulf of Guinea. The Deep Blue Project also has a specially trained unit of troops – Maritime Security Unit (MSU) which is a formation of personnel from the Nigerian Navy, Air Force, Army, Police Force and the Department of State and the hope is that it will significantly reduce the incidents of piracy in Nigerian territorial waters and the Gulf of Guinea generally.
