RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH ALCOHOL – BASED HAND SANITISERS – WARNING FROM IOGP
Published: 5 May 2020
The safety alert prepared by the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) acts as a timely reminder of the potential risk of burns associated with the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers, which can ignite if exposed to an ignition source before the sanitiser has fully evaporated and dried.
In the incident referred to in the alert, the individual touched a metal surface where a build-up of static created an ignition source and ignited the sanitiser. This resulted in an almost invisible flame on both hands, which although extinguished, caused first and second degree burns.
