Published: 27 February 2020

There has recently been a substantial increase in the upper limits of all types of administrative fines imposed under Greek law in the event of pollution of marine environment.

The position could be briefly summarized as follows:

  1. In pollution incidents that are not deemed to cause a serious detrimental effect to the marine environment, the maximum fine amount has now been increased to Euros 100,000 (from Euros 60,000)
  2. In serious pollution incidents, the maximum fine amount has now been increased to Euros 2,000,000 (from Euros 1,200,000)
  3. In case the pollution is found to be caused deliberately in order to benefit the interests of a company or other legal entity, on top of the fine imposed on the persons responsible, there is an additional fine imposable on the company or other legal entity, and the maximum amount of such additional fine has now been increased to Euros 800,000 (from Euros 500,000).

The same above fines / amounts also apply to pollution incidents caused by substances other than oil.
