SOUTH AFRICA: WARNING OF FINES FOR ILLEGAL OFF THE SIDE FISHING
Published: 6 June 2019
Correspondents in Durban have warned that authorities there are cracking down on illegal fishing. It is forbidden to fish off the side of a ship without a fishing permit. In the past the authorities have not been strict about upholding these regulations but recently 3 seafarers were arrested for fishing off the side. Maximum penalties are up to 5 years in prison and fines of the equivalent of USD 134,000. In addition, the ship can face lengthy delays.
Correspondents advise that seafarers should not fish off the side and remind ships that any fish products on board must be declared and the origin of the fish must be proved.
