SINGAPORE: BANNING THE USE OF OPEN LOOP SCRUBBERS IN PORT WATERS

Published: 13 December 2018

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has announced that ships fitted with open-loop scrubbers will not be allowed to discharge scrubber wash water in Singapore after 1 January 2020. These ships will have to burn 0.5 percent sulphur fuel when calling Singapore in order to comply with the 2020 low sulphur regulations.

Ships with scrubbers of the closed or hybrid type and which can retain their wash residues on board are still allowed.

Singapore also announced that they will offer shore reception facilities for closed-loop scrubber residues.
