HONG KONG: CONTAMINATED FUEL WARNING
Published: 16 August 2018
The Lloyds Registry fuel analysis service (FOBAS) has warned that in the past week bunker fuel oils in Hong Kong were found to ‘contain components not normally present in marine fuels’. After analysis, some fuel was found to contain evidence of fatty acids, various monoglycerides and other oxygenated compounds. This contravenes the Revised MARPOL Annex VI regulation 18.3 and the International Marine Fuel Standard ISO 8217, Clause 5. As the only way to identify the contamination prior to use is through a laboratory analysis, sufficient samples should be taken and analysed before the fuel is used and also additional samples retained for future testing.
