Following on from recent news items on the Zika virus, most recently BNS dated 1 September 2016, the Chinese quarantine authorities (CIQ) have now added Singapore to the list of countries affected by the Zika virus with effect from 1 September. This means that ships sailing from Singapore to China are recommended to obtain a mosquito eradication certificate in advance to meet the CIQ requirements. Local correspondents in China, Huatai, have contacted the Chinese CIQ who have confirmed that if the ship calls at Singapore only for bunkering, then Singapore would not be considered as an actual port of call for Zika virus purposes. Correspondents have also found out that there are different requirements at individual CIQ offices in different ports and so Members are strongly advised to check with local agents in advance exactly what is required.
