USA: US COAST GUARD APPROVED BALLAST TREATMENT SYSTEMS
The US Coast Guard (USCG) has approved the Ecochlor® Ballast Water Treatment System. The New Haven, Connecticut-based Ecochlor joins Norwegian manufacturer Optimarin and OceanSaver and Sweden’s Alfa Laval as the only other ballast water gear makers to have received the USCG type-approval. Ecochlor’s system uses a combination of filtration and chlorine dioxide to rid ballast water of invasive species. Ecochlor says on its website the gear is designed for larger bulkers and tankers, with very high ballast flow rates. Jeffrey Lantz, the director of regulations and standards at the USCG, told attendees at the Connecticut Maritime Association Shipping 2017 meeting last month that shipowners will face more pressure to show why they cannot install one of the systems now that they are available. The USCG also has one other pending type-approval application from China’s Sunrui for a filtration and electrolysis system.
