UKRAINE: FURTHER WARNINGS ABOUT ECOLOGICAL INSPECTORS
Members are reminded of the article in BNS 571 dated 18 August 2016 where Ukrainian correspondents warned of cases where ‘ecological inspectors’ try to force their way on board ships to take segregated ballast water samples which are then used to either impose a fine on the ship or to persuade the harbour master to detain the ship which can lead to costly delays. These incidents, appear to be getting more frequent. Local correspondents repeat their advice that such inspectors should not be allowed to take any samples and should never be given any ship’s documentation. If masters do come under pressure from these so-called inspectors then they should contact local P&I correspondents or local agents for assistance straight away.
