SPAIN: SPANISH PORTS UPDATE
July 22, 2017
The strikes in Spanish ports are still going ahead for this week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday on odd hours only) and further strikes are planned as follows:
• from 26 June at 8:00 hours to 28 June at 8:00 hours (odd hours only)
• from 29 June 2017 at 8:00 hours up to 1 July at 8:00 hours (odd hours only)
• from 3 July 2017 at 8:00 hours up to 5 July 2017 at 8:00 hours (odd hours only)
• from 6 July 2017 at 8:00 hours up to 8 July 2017 at 8:00 hours (odd hours only)
It appears that the situation varies between port to port. In some ports, stevedores are reported to be working normally on the days and hours when there are no strikes, but in other places stevedores were taking holidays in addition to the strike days and so this increased the disruption, especially over the weekends. The level of disruption also depends on the various terminals and the individual relationships between the unions and the management. There is still no general agreement between the ports and the stevedore unions and the situation has not been helped by the announcement that some container terminals will be bought by foreign companies and so services will be privatised in those areas. Members are advised to contact local agents and correspondents for up to date information.
