Local correspondents (Hispania Pandi in Barcelona) have advised us of an ongoing dispute between the Spanish authorities and stevedores in Spain. There has been a monopoly of stevedoring services in Spain by the public stevedoring pool company SAGEP. In December 2014 this system was found to be in breach of EU legislation and since then the Spanish government has been in the process of amending their domestic legislation to comply with the EU rules which means the phasing out the SAGEP monopoly. SAGEP has reacted by calling a series of strikes (which are planned to start on 9 March) and also it should be expected that there will be unofficial ‘go slow’ action by the stevedores. Members are advised to contact local agents and correspondents for further information.
