PIRACY: END OF YEAR REPORT FROM RECAAP
January 19, 2017
The Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against ships in Asia (ReCAAP) has issued its report for 2016. It shows a decrease of 58% in the number of incidents reported. The Straits of Malacca and Singapore area had the greatest reduction, from 104 cases in 2015 to 2 cases in 2016. The report came out just as news of an attempted boarding of a chemical tanker in the Singapore Strait. The master took evasive action, raised the alarm and shone a spotlight onto the small craft and the attempt at boarding was abandoned.
