PIRACY – DENMARK SEND MONITORING PLANE TO THE HORN OF AFRICAN
Last week Denmark announced that it is sending a maritime patrol aircraft to support the monitoring of shipping traffic in the Indian Ocean. The ministry of foreign affairs said that the aircraft would contribute to the surveillance capabilities, working with the Combined Maritime Forces around the Horn of Africa to improve maritime security in the area. Initially the deployment will be for a month from mid May to mid June 2017. This comes at a time when piracy in the area is increasing again for the first time in many years, prompted in part by a local drought and continued tensions in the region. Members are reminded to check the piracy focus page on the Britannia website and to always remain vigilant when in the area.
