PIRACY: FURTHER ATTACKS REPORTED
There have been several reported cases of piracy off the coast of Somalia in recent weeks. Opinion is divided about whether the attacks are a sign that piracy levels are returning to the peak levels experienced around 2010/11. It could be that the severe drought in the area is encouraging pirates to look to piracy for food and fuel in difficult times. In a case this week a 10,000 dwt chemical and product tanker came under fire but was rescued by Chinese naval forces. Last week a pirate skiff chased a ship for nearly two hours but the master took evasive action and the skiff gave up. Members are reminded to be vigilant at all times when in the area.
