NEW REGULATIONS IN FUJAIRAH FOR SICK OR INJURED CREW
February 2, 2017
We have been informed by our local correspondents and local lawyers that new regulations have been put in place in Fujairah (with effect from 19 January 2017) concerning the disembarkation of sick/injured crew from ships. In the event the sick/injured crew member is not fit to sail with the ship and needs to be hospitalised, the ship will only be allowed to sail out once a medical visa has been secured and once the Fujairah Port Authorities have reviewed the matter and are satisfied that adequate repatriation procedures are in place.
If a crew member is seriously injured, rather than sick, the police authorities need to be notified as they have the discretion to conduct an onboard investigation as they see fit and the ship can sail only after obtaining clearance from police headquarters.
The advice from our correspondents is that in future Members may wish to consider nearby ports such as Jebel Ali and Sohar for any crew disembarkation on medical grounds in order to avoid possible delays.
