CHINA: THEFTS IN TIANJIN PORT

Local correspondents have warned of a number of thefts from ships in the Tianjin anchorage area, about 20 nm from the port entrance. The thieves often disguise their boats as fishing vessels and the thefts are more frequent in the winter months when high seas interfere with radar signal and there may be fewer crew on patrol. Correspondents have provided a number of precautions that can be taken to try and prevent such thefts:

• Close anchor chain covers after dropping anchor

• Turn on all deck lights and arrange cargo lights outboard at night

• Keep all stores secure and lock doors from the inside

• Keep fire hoses connected on deck

• Ensure there is a proper lookout on the bridge and regular patrols are carried out

• Keep mooring lines secure

If thieves are apprehended, then contact the coastguard and local correspondents straight away.
