BRITANNIA’S BSAFE CAMPAIGN WINS 2021 SAFETY4SEA INITIATIVE AWARD

Published: 20 October 2021

Britannia P&I launched BSafe in November 2020 as an online safety campaign targeted at the seafarers of its Members, with the aim of helping to influence behaviours and prevent onboard injuries and losses

Recognising the demands and pressures on the crew who work on board its Members’ ships, particularly given the extra challenges due to the global pandemic, Britannia created the BSafe initiative. BSafe supports seafarers through a dedicated online resource providing best practice information and the latest thinking on onboard safety and security. The BSafe website is updated with practical materials, case studies and best practice advice around three core themes of onboard safety, seafarer health and onboard security.

One of the key aims of BSafe is to encourage seafarers to reflect on various safety, security and health matters and how these relate to their own situation. To support this Britannia has produced monthly incident case studies based on real incidents or claims. Each case study is supported by special reflective learning aids which can be used by Britannia’s Members and their crews to support their own onboard safety meetings or knowledge sharing initiatives. The latest case study featured a serious injury that occurred while securing containers on a dry cargo ship.

Accepting the award on behalf of Britannia P&I, Jacob Damgaard, Associate Director, Loss Prevention, said, “It is a huge honour to accept this award on behalf of Britannia P&I. Thank you to everyone that voted for us. Being safe is not just about safety, it is also about wellbeing, health and feeling secure and this is why the BSafe campaign focused on these three main topics. We hope that BSafe is helping our Members’ seafarers stay safe and healthy in these challenging times”.

“I am delighted that the industry has recognised the hard work that our team has put into this important initiative. The aim of BSafe is simple, to help our Members’ Seafarers be healthy, secure and safe’,” said Andrew Cutler, CEO, Britannia P&I. He added that “BSafe is regularly updated and I encourage our Members’ seafarers to make use of the materials provided to help prevent accidents and keep crew morale high”.
