BRITANNIA LOSS PREVENTION: PILOTAGE REPORT PUBLISHED

The recent “Report on P&I claims involving vessels under pilotage 1999-2019” by the International Group of P&I Clubs points to sub-optimal Bridge Resource Management as the dominant underlying cause of many such claims. As an expert in ship handling with local knowledge, the pilot will often be engaged in the most critical phases in a ship’s passage where marine incidents are most likely to occur. Britannia’s own review of claims involving ships under pilotage reveals the lack or ineffectiveness of challenge and intervention by the bridge team as a key contributory factor.
To assist Members, Britannia has produced a Loss Prevention report which considers the impact that the lack of effective intervention has in pilotage-related incidents and explains what steps can be taken to reduce the risks involved. The report uses case studies to illustrate the contributory factors and lessons learned and is available on the Britannia website.
